In honor of Italy’s most celebrated explorer, Columbus Day is a good time to dive into the bewildering world of Italian wine. Italy has 900,000 registered vineyards in 20 regions, producing wines from more than 1,000 grape varieties.
You’re probably familiar with wines from Tuscany and Piedmont and some from the northeastern regions near Venice, but as Italian imports continue to increase, there will be many more to choose from. Your favorite wine merchant can guide you through the maze and assist you in choosing a wine to your liking, but here are some of my recommendations.
And if you have trouble deciding, you can always sip a chilled limoncello, the beautiful Italian lemon liquor.
