Best of Augusta 2012 - Best Media
TV Station
The winner—WJBF—broadcasts from the all-new Television Park, where viewers often picnic on the grounds. (Overnight camping is not encouraged.) WAGT26 rose 24 spots to place second. WRDW did wonders in third.
TV Weather Personality
Mister Weather Person Personality is none other than Jay Jeffries. George Myers gets the silver and, in third, new bride Jenna Lee Thomas wears the cape as Mrs. Weatherwoman.
Sports Personality
Voters raised Kane all the way to first-string status. Congratulations, Chris Kane of WJBF. The Augusta Chronicle’s Chris Gay is a sportswriter, but also writes a mean editorial on hot-button issues. Ashley Brown, better known as A.B., holds forth on WGAC and in the Columbia County News-Times.
TV Hair
You would expect this to be all about the ladies, right? Not so. Paige Tucker is the reigning queen. If for any reason she is unable to complete her reign…well, we were going to say Brad Means is the heir apparent, but…let’s just say less is more. Enough for Brad to get second place, if only by a hair. Liz Hill can put a bronze medal next to her gold.
Radio Station
Don’t touch that dial—if it’s tuned to WGAC, now on both AM and FM. Kicks99 and WBBQ are the other buttons to set, second and third.
Radio Morning Talk Show
Here, voters reunite Handsome Harley and Mary Liz for first place. No fighting over the gold medal, you two! Over at WAFJ, John and Cleve serve it up every morning, and Kicks 99’s Wake Up Krew With John and Steve roust us out of bed in third.
Local News Story
This one was so easy a regent could have figured it out: the hornet’s nest of the ASU/MCG/GHSU/GRU consolidation and all the game-changing, name-changing repercussions that came along with it. Hooda thunk? In the aftermath of two fatalities, readers said the “share the road” battle between motorists and bicyclists ranked second. In third, city administrator Fred Russell’s often tenuous hold on his job.
Local Writer
The Augusta Chronicle’s Bill Kirby is once again the Garden City’s favorite word processor. We notified him by postcard. Sylvia Cooper keeps the city ink flowing in second. Jennie Montgomery takes third. (All three were write-in candidates.)
Part of Augusta Magazine
We are honored and humbled that every winner in this category is part of Augusta Magazine. Wow. What are the odds? Your number one top most favorite feature is the “Best of Augusta.” In the main that means this issue, but it also includes issues wherein we feature other bests, like “Best Doctors.” It’s all good. “Around Town” and our featured homes complete the top three.
Facebook Page
When readers aren’t on the couch watching WJBF, it turns out they’re checked into their Facebook page. It’s called keeping in touch. Voters also say that the Columbia County News-Times’ Facebook page doesn’t get ink on their fingers. In third, the Battle of the Designers is a “draw” between Kruhu and Wier/Stewart. Seems fitting.
Person To Follow on Twitter
That would be Barry Paschal. Tweet this: He’s the tweetingest Twitterer in this part of the world. How many people can say that? In second, Rob Pavey, The Chronicle’s outdoor editor, tweets about fish and trees and stuff. In third, Lindsey Thetford tweets about, well, just about everything.
