(ahr-tuh-zuhan): A person or company that makes a high-quality, distinctive product in small quantities, usually by hand and using traditional methods.

In late 2008 the Franks family had to make a tough decision. Dairy farmers for more than 20 years, they had to decide whether to sell the farm or find a way to turn a profit.

They decided to build a bottling plant on the farm so that they could process their own milk. It made sense. The registered Brown Swiss herd they had developed over the last quarter of a century would be the perfect quality for locally produced milk. The plant was finished and the first batch of milk was processed on January 30, 2010.

Their milk is natural and free of artificial growth hormones, processed and bottled the same day the cows are milked. Product offerings have expanded from milk to include ice cream and butter. Their milk is also being used in a variety of artisan cheeses at Flat Creek Lodge in Swainsboro and feta and fromage frais produced by CalyRoad Creamery. Products can be purchased at their on-site store or in Augusta through Augusta Locally Grown.
