Culinary classes opened in October at the new Helms College, part of the expanded Goodwill Industries campus on Washington Road. The college, named after Edgar J. Helms, who founded Goodwill Industries International in 1902, begins its second quarter of classes January 14.

Helms College follows the Goodwill philosophy of giving everyone the opportunity to get ahead in life and be successful. Students can work toward an associate’s degree.

The college includes three state-of-the-art kitchen laboratories and four 20-seat classrooms. Chef David Ross, department chair of culinary education, will head up the Augusta campus.

The campus includes Edgar’s Grill, a 100-seat Mediterranean restaurant with a large pizza oven, extensive wine selection and alfresco-style seating for 40 outside.  Cookbook author and master chef Marcel Biro, who also had a cooking show on PBS, will serve as vice president of hospitality and will head up both Edgar’s Grill and the Conference Center at Edgar’s.

The restaurant and hospitality center were scheduled to open in late December or early January.
